The vacant seat was soon filled by Van Bronkhorst, a former defender for the Netherlands national team. Who also had coaching roles at Feyenoord, Guangzhou R&F, Rangers FC and Besiktas.

And with his diverse experience, having travelled almost halfway around the world. Gakpo is confident he will see the out-of-the-box thinking coming from his 50-year-old assistant.

“He’s already a wealth of experience as a player having also been a head coach.” Gakpo said of the former defender, who has more than 100 caps for the Orange.

“I think he can teach us a lot, considering his experience in both roles throughout his career.”

“He can tell you from the perspective of an ex-player, from the team he played for. So I think everyone is wondering how he ended up at this level with our team.”

The Reds are currently on a pre-season tour in Hong Kong, before heading to Japan. The training session began with a light schedule to allow time to accelerate. Before the match against AC Milan (July 26).

The Dutchman added :

“The boss said to start with light training at the beginning of the week. I’m already nervous about how hard the massage will be next time!”

“But it was a good practice to get used to the weather and everything.”

“Of course, it’s gotten more intense. I see the team improving during pre-season for a number of reasons. Now that we’re in Hong Kong, the schedule is more intense, preparing for the upcoming season.”

“Even though we had a great season last year. I still want to improve as a team. So that we can challenge for the Premier League and Champions League titles.”

“The welcome from the fans was amazing. Even when we returned to the hotel, the crowd was still cheering us on. They never disappoint.”

“As we always say, ‘You’ll never walk alone.’ They’re everywhere. It’s really amazing. I’m looking forward to the game where I can play in front of everyone.”

After Hong Kong, the ‘ Reds ‘ will fly into Japan to warm up against Yokohama F. Marinos ( 30 July ) before flying back to England.
